Your hobby is swim? Sport this one is one of sports most refreshing as well membugarkan body. But you should be cautious when swimming in public pools. New research warns that swimming pools can trigger cancer. How? As you know, in addition to the disinfectant (liquid disinfectant), the water in the swimming pool also contains sweat, hair, skin, urine, and beauty products like lotion and sunscreen are used by swimmers.
Disinfectant that serves to maintain the pool water free from this disease, if it reacts with urine and hair causing asthma and risk of bladder cancer. Meanwhile, if reacted with cosmetic products are generally packaged with the element nitrogen, can form toxic compounds that can trigger a genetic mutation in humans. In the long run this mutation can cause birth defects, accelerate the aging process, causing respiratory problems, and also cancer.
This result is known after a team of researchers from the University of Illinois tried to compare samples of tap water with water samples from several swimming pools. Using advanced DNA technology, they found that water samples from swimming pools were more at risk of causing damage in human cells. "This study compares the use of disinfection methods that are different environmental conditions. Our results show that all samples that have been disinfected pool water showed more DNA damage compared with tap water sources," said lead investigator, Professor Michael Plewa.
"All sources of water has organic material from decaying leaves, microbes and other living creatures who have died," he continued.
According to Michael, there are some simple steps that can be done to reduce these impacts, including by considering the choice of disinfectant in swimming pool maintenance. Also avoid materials containing bromine as a disinfectant pool water chemistry.
"The best method to protect the pool water is the combined treatment of UV (ultra violet) with chlorine as compared with only chlorination," he said as quoted by the Telegraph.
Swimmers can also help reduce the toxins in the water pool with a bath first before entering into a swimming pool. In addition, the pool manager should also be frequently reminded to inform the user about potential pool hazards posed if they throw a little water in the pool.
These findings have been published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.
